Tiling as part of a complete bathroom

Bathroom tiling covers walls, floors, shower areas, splashbacks and features like niches and shelves. At DPB, tiling is carried out as part of our bathroom, en-suite, wet room and shower installations, so the surfaces underneath are prepared by the same team that fits the room.

It's for homeowners who want a finish they can be proud of. Customers regularly mention the quality of our tiling and shower finishes, and details like a built-in shower shelf they didn't know was possible.

Re-tiling is usually needed when tiles are cracked or loose, grout has failed and turned black, or the bathroom is being renovated.

Professional tiling matters because tiles are only as good as the surface behind them. Uneven or damp walls lead to lippage, cracking and water getting through, no amount of grout can fix a bad base.

Why poor tiling causes bigger problems

Bad tiling isn't just ugly: in a bathroom it's a leak waiting to happen.

Water behind the tiles

Gaps in adhesive and failed grout let water reach the wall. In shower areas that leads to damp, mould and blown plaster.

Cracked and loose tiles

Tiles laid on flexing floors or uneven walls crack and come loose, and replacements rarely match.

A finish that looks off forever

Wonky lines and badly placed cuts are permanent once grouted.

Common mistakes we see

  • Tiling over existing tiles or damaged plaster.
  • Not setting out the tiles first, leaving thin slivers at edges.
  • Using the wrong adhesive or grout for wet areas.
  • Laying floor tiles on boards that flex.

Tile types, layouts and finishes

Tile choice affects how the room looks, how it cleans and how it feels underfoot.

Porcelain vs ceramic

Porcelain is dense, hard-wearing and suits floors and large-format walls. Ceramic is lighter and works well on walls. Both can look excellent when properly fitted.

Large-format tiles

Large tiles mean fewer grout lines and a modern look, but they need very flat surfaces: another reason preparation matters.

Layouts and patterns

Straight-lay, brick-bond, herringbone or feature walls each create a different effect. Layout is planned before the first tile goes on.

Floors and slip resistance

Bathroom floors, especially in wet rooms, benefit from textured or smaller tiles that give grip when wet.

Niches, shelves and details

Recessed niches and tiled shelves give neat storage in showers. Edge trims and mitred corners give a clean finish.

Tiling-only jobs

Our tiling is carried out as part of complete bathroom, en-suite, wet room and shower installations. If you're unsure whether your job fits, give Danny a call.

Choosing bathroom tiles: practical advice

Think about cleaning

Larger tiles mean fewer grout lines to keep clean. Glossy tiles show water marks; matt finishes hide them better but can show soap residue. Your daily routine should guide the choice as much as the look.

Floor tiles need grip

Bathroom floors get wet. Choose tiles rated for floors, and for showers and wet rooms, tiles with a textured or slip-resistant surface.

Order enough: plus spare

Cuts, breakages and pattern matching mean you always need more tiles than the floor and wall area alone. Keeping a few spare tiles from the same batch also helps with any future repair. Danny can advise on quantities.

Grout colour matters

Light grout looks crisp but shows dirt sooner; mid-grey grout is forgiving. Matching or contrasting grout changes the look of the whole room, so it's worth deciding before tiling starts.

Feature walls and details

A feature wall behind the bath or in the shower adds interest without overwhelming a room. Built-in niches give storage, and neat trims finish edges cleanly.

Why preparation comes first

Even the best tiles look poor on an uneven wall. Removing old tiles, repairing plaster or re-boarding gives a flat, solid base. It's the step customers never see and the reason their tiling still looks right years later.

Why one project manager matters

On most building jobs, delays happen in the gaps between trades: the plasterer can't start until the electrician has finished, and the tiler is booked before the walls are dry. Because Danny schedules every trade himself, those gaps are planned out. Customers regularly tell us the job was quicker and less stressful than they expected, and that they always knew who would be in the house and when.

What to expect while work is underway

You'll know who is coming and when. The team arrives when they say they will, protects floors and furniture, and tidies up at the end of each day. If a decision is needed, a tile layout, a towel rail position, Danny will talk it through with you rather than guess. Invoices are clear and receipts are provided.

Tiling around fittings

Neat cuts around pipes, valves, windows and the edges of baths and trays are what separate a good tiling job from an average one. Setting out the tiles around these points first means the visible cuts are even and the finished wall looks deliberate.

Bathroom Tiling: common questions

How much does bathroom tiling cost?

Tiling is priced as part of your bathroom quote and depends on the area, tile size and preparation needed. The free survey gives you a full written price.

Do you do tiling on its own?

Tiling is carried out as part of our bathroom, en-suite, wet room and shower installations. Call Danny to talk about your job.

Can you tile over existing tiles?

We prefer to remove old tiles and prepare the surface properly. It's the best way to get a flat, long-lasting finish.

Can I choose my own tiles?

Yes. Danny can advise on suitability and quantities before you buy.

Can you build a shelf or niche in the shower?

Yes, in many cases. It's planned at the survey before walls are boarded.

What guarantee do I get on a bathroom?

Every bathroom installation carries a 48-month (4-year) workmanship guarantee. That covers the installation work Danny and his team carry out. Terms and conditions apply to fixtures and materials you supply yourself, so if you're buying your own suite, Danny will talk you through what is and isn't covered before work starts.

Is the quote really free?

Yes. Quotes are free and there is no obligation. Danny visits, looks at the room, the pipework and the walls, and gives you a written price. If you decide not to go ahead, that's the end of it, no follow-up pressure.

Do you accept call-outs?

We don't run a 24/7 service. Bathroom work is planned and booked in. If you have a leak or a problem that can't wait, ring Danny on 07951 583606, if he's available, he'll come out.

Which areas do you cover?

We work across Wigan, Manchester, Preston, Leigh, Astley, Warrington, Worsley, Chorley, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Standish, Hindley and Atherton. If you're just outside those areas, ring Danny and ask.

How long does tiling take?

It depends on the size of the room, the tile size and the amount of preparation. Tiling time is built into the overall bathroom schedule Danny gives you with your quote.

Do you remove old tiles?

Yes. Removing old tiles and preparing the surface is part of the job.
